The Structure

Each group of floating pontoons is made into a field control structure. Generally, a group of pontoons is divided into two pontoon blocks (sometimes three), and the inner shape of each pontoon block is matched with the outer diameter of the riser and the auxiliary pipe.

Some situations need to be considered in the design stage of pontoon structure, mainly including the following points:

  1. The buoy shell is usually molded by the whole mold, then the foam material is injected into the package. The surface material is generally fiber reinforced material, which has strong anti-wear and impact ability. The buoy made of this material has a hard surface and can withstand water pressure in deep water.

  2. In some cases, in order to further increase the strength of the buoy block, a layer reinforcement network is added between the floating barrel shell and the synthetic foam material.

  3. In order to avoid that the bending cutting load generated by gravity in the horizontal plane is excessively transmitted to the pontoon during the installation or hoisting of the riser, two flexible pads are consciously designed in the inner circumference of the pontoon block.

  4. The upper and lower end faces of most pontoons are designed as sleeve type. One end of each sleeve is designed as concave end and one end is designed as convex end, so that after the sleeve is installed, each independent group of pontoons form a pontoon string, which is conducive to evenly distributing buoyancy during some operations.

  5. After the pontoon block is processed, the outer circumferential surface of the pontoon block is often designed as a plane in order to facilitate stacking ratio.

  6. The main function of the pontoon is to provide buoyancy for the riser in the water. Each pontoon block shall be installed and fixed in a specific riser section, and its internal groove shape must correspond to the actual structure of the riser.

  7. In order to distinguish the pontoons in different water depth sections, the pontoons are distinguished by different colors.

Role and Requirements of Pontoon in Offshore Oil and Gas System

In offshore oil and gas systems, rigid risers are more and more widely used in deep-sea environment. Pontoon materials are usually installed outside deep-sea risers, mainly to reduce the weight of rigid risers in deep-sea; In addition, because the riser works in the harsh marine environment for a long time, these pontoons fixed on its outer surface can also play a good role in protection. High temperature and high pressure (HP / HT) reservoirs, such as those in the North Sea of Europe, the Gulf of Mexico of North America and the Bohai Bay of China, put forward higher insulation requirements for marine risers to prevent the formation of wax and hydrate when the products are cooled along the pipeline. In addition to the design of marine riser, the external floating structure can also play a good role in thermal insulation protection. Therefore, according to the performance and service conditions of deepwater technology marine riser, its external pontoon material must meet the following requirements:

  1. The density of pontoon material shall be as small as possible to provide as much buoyancy as possible per unit volume, so as to improve the working performance of marine riser;

  2. It can withstand the required hydrostatic pressure (the water pressure increases by 1MPa for every 100m of marine riser), and will not cause damage within the specified service depth, i.e. compressive conditions;

  3. Low water absorption and bulk elastic modulus enable it to provide stable buoyancy under large water pressure and ensure the safe and reliable operation of marine riser. At the same time, it is necessary to consider the overall treatment, load and use of riser and floating Jane materials, and the safety and reliability problems such as crack, crack and loss of buoyancy can occur during the use of floating Jane materials. The reinforced floating Jane material can be quite tough. For example, coating two layers of Kevlar FRP on the surface of the floating Jane material and strengthening the material inside can increase the strength of the floating Jane material and make it safer to use.
